Face-to-face telepresence promotes the sense of "being there" and can improve collaboration by allowing immediate understanding of remote people's non verbal cues. Several approaches successfully explored interactions with 2D content using a see-through whiteboard metaphor. Nonetheless, 3D content poses many specific problems and may cause a decrease in awareness due to ambiguities originated by participants' opposing points-of-view. Contrary points-of-view can result in different perceptions or even serious communication misunderstandings, leading to disastrous consequences, especially in the healthcare field. In this research, we address how people and content should be presented for discussing 3D renderings within face-to-face collaborative sessions. In this document, we motivate the proposed research and provide a critical analysis of the state-of-the-art. With this, we present novel approaches to improve remote collaboration by promoting face-to-face nonverbal communication in Virtual and Augmented Reality contexts.
